Habit Stacking: A Softer Way to Build Better Routines

I used to think that becoming consistent required a full personality refresh. New planner. New morning routine. New version of me who magically wakes up at 5 AM and drinks lemon water first thing.

Every time I tried to โ€œreset my life,โ€ I would last about three days before feeling overwhelmed. It was always too much, too fast.

What actually changed things for me was something much gentler. Instead of reinventing myself overnight, I started adding tiny habits onto things I was already doing. Just small, sweet upgrades to my everyday routines.

What Habit Stacking Is (& Why It Works)

Habit stacking is stacking good habits in the same time block, so you actually do them. Think of it as giving your current routine a little accessory. You already make coffee (or tea, or matcha) in the morning so while it brews, write down three things youโ€™re grateful for.

You already wash your face at night, so press play on an educational podcast instead of scrolling. You already plug in your phone before bed, so read one page of your book first.

The beauty of habit stacking is that you are not asking yourself to find extra time or motivation. The new habit is anchored to something that already exists, and it easily slides into place without feeling forced. This makes it feel less like discipline and more like quietly becoming the kind of person you want to be.

My Real-Life Habit Stacking Examples

The habits I stack are not groundbreaking! They are just small pairings that make my day feel more intentional.

While my coffee brews in the morning, I open my journal and will write down a few thoughts. I write what comes to mind and donโ€™t think too hard about it. Itโ€™s a tiny pause before emails and notifications that helps me ground myself for the rest of the day.

While I eat lunch, Iโ€™ll record a quick voice memo with thoughts from the day, ideas I have, so I can have a more productive afternoon.

At night, I love wearing my red light mask (use code TAYLORLOVE for special savings!) while walking on my walking pad. This allows me to get glowy skin while moving my body!

None of these hits are dramatic, which is the magic! Theyโ€™re small enough to repeat and that repetition is what builds momentum.

How to Start Habit Stacking

Start with one thing you already do every day without thinking. Making your bed, brushing your teeth, brewing coffee, turning off the lights at night. Then attach one tiny habit to it! Drink a glass of water after you brush your teeth, stretch for a few minutes before getting into bed, read while you wear your red light mask.

The trick is to keep it almost too easy so it feels natural, and then over time you can add another habit (or two!) to your routine to give yourself that quiet upgrade.

You do not need a dramatic reset to become the version of you that you are working toward. Sometimes it is just about sprinkling tiny shifts into the routines you already have.

Habit stacking has felt like the sweetest way to build structure without pressure. Itโ€™s subtle and steady and over time, those little choices add. Up in a way that feels powerful.

XO!
