How to Find the Right Nontoxic Mattress + My Avocado Mattress Review
Back in 2018, when I was going through my autoimmune health journey, I started working with a naturopathic doctor who helped identify ways to lower my overall toxic burden. We looked at everything from the products I was using daily to the environment I was sleeping in, and thatโs what led me to my first nontoxic mattress.
It might sound dramatic to say that switching my mattress helped, but it truly did. Through a challenging time of feeling like absolute garbage, I became so passionate about lowering the chemicals we use and breathe in and have seen a massive difference from these changes. I didnโt change everything at once but made swaps here and there – it truly has become my biggest passion.
When you think about it, youโre spending nearly a third of your life sleeping, so what youโre sleeping on does matter.ย Unfortunately, traditional mattresses off-gas chemicals like VOCs and formaldehyde which unfortunately I am especially sensitive to. Iโm just thankful to KNOW that now!ย
Fast forward to today โ we recently upgraded to the Avocado Green Mattress, and I absolutely love it. Itโs been the perfect balance of comfort, quality, and peace of mind. But before I get into the full review, letโs back up a bit to how I got here.
My Nontoxic Mattress Journey
When I first switched to a nontoxic mattress years ago, I started with a different brand that I really liked. So when we moved into our new house, I reordered the same one for our master bedroom without thinking twice.
Unfortunately, something had changed. The new mattress (Happsy) had an awful latex smell, so strong it filled the whole room! A lot of green mattresses use wool and latex, and while those are technically natural materials, they can have this pungent odor that doesnโt always go away. We ended up returning it, which put us back at square one trying to find a new nontoxic mattress that actually worked for us.
I went into full research mode (shocker, I know) and found a store in Nashville that carried a few different green mattress brands, including Avocado and Naturepedic. I liked both, but what ultimately stood out about Avocado was the comfort for the price โ and the fact that it didnโt have that strong wool or latex smell. It also feels like a luxury mattress at a solid price point for the quality!
For anyone whoโs chemically sensitive or just canโt stand that off-gassing scent, this is huge. The Avocado Green Mattress felt clean, comfortable, and fresh right out of the box.
That said, I still think Naturepedic makes a great option too. Several of my friends have theirs and love them! But for us, Avocado checked all the right boxes.
What to Look for in a Nontoxic Mattress
If youโre in the market for a new mattress and want to make sure itโs truly nontoxic, hereโs what to pay attention to.
Youโre sleeping on your mattress every single night, and unfortunately, many traditional mattresses are made with materials that release VOCs (volatile organic compounds). VOCs are gases that off-gas from synthetic foams, adhesives, and flame retardantsโand theyโre the reason new mattresses or furniture often have that โchemical smell.โ
Over time, exposure to VOCs (and other chemicals like formaldehyde) can contribute to poor indoor air quality and impact your overall wellbeing.
Thatโs why switching to a nontoxic mattress can make such a differenceโitโs something you use daily and literally breathe in while you sleep.
Here are a few key things to look for:

Once I knew what to look for, Avocado stood out right away. I still work with the same incredible integrative doctor and she gives Avocado the gold stamp of approval as well!
Why We Chose the Avocado Green Mattress
We actually had a queen-size Avocado Green Mattress in our guest room at our last house, so I already knew how comfortable it was. When it came time to replace our master bedroom mattress, I didnโt hesitate to go with the king-size version.
Hereโs what sealed the deal:
- Itโs made with certified organic materials (latex, wool, and cotton).
- It comes in a box, so itโs super easy and accessible.
- It has a slight wool scent when you first unbox it, but itโs natural and goes away within a day.
- Itโs incredibly comfortable for the price โ truly a 12/10.
- It feels like an elevated sleep experience, like the best of a traditional mattress without the harmful chemicals.
One of my biggest qualms with other green mattresses is that they often focus so much on being natural that they forget about comfort. But Avocado doesnโt. Itโs soft yet supportive, plush without being too sink-in squishy, and overall feels really well-made.
They also offer a mattress topper if you want an even cozier feel. Itโs not necessary since the mattress itself is already super comfortable, but itโs something Iโm definitely eyeing for the future.
My Honest Review of the Avocado Green Mattress
Comfort & Feel
The Avocado Green Mattress has that perfect medium-firm balance. Itโs supportive enough for your back but still feels plush and comfortable. From the very first night, I noticed how much better my sleep quality was. It doesnโt dip or sag in the middle like some foam mattresses, and after a few weeks, it still felt brand new.
Materials & Build Quality
Everything about the build feels intentional and high-quality. The combination of organic latex, wool, and cotton gives it a breathable, natural feel that doesnโt trap heat. You can tell itโs made to last, and that craftsmanship really stands out compared to other brands weโve tried.
Sleep Experience
We both sleep really comfortably on it โ no overheating, no motion transfer issues, and great edge support (which is key if your dog takes up half the bed like ours does ha). Itโs the kind of mattress you wake up on and think, wow, that was actually restful.
Off-Gassing & Smell
When we first opened it, there was a faint wool scent that went away after about a day. There was no chemical smell at all, which was a big relief after our last experience!!
Price Point & Value
For the quality and certifications youโre getting, the price point is incredible. It feels like a luxury mattress without the luxury markup, and knowing itโs made with clean, sustainable materials makes it that much better.
Is the Avocado Mattress Worth It?
In my opinionโabsolutely. The Avocado Green Mattress is a perfect fit for:
- Eco-conscious shoppers who want to minimize toxins in their home
- Anyone with chemical sensitivities
- People who prefer a medium-firm mattress thatโs supportive yet cozy
Pros:โจ
- Certified organic + nontoxic materials
- Excellent comfort and support
- Minimal smell and no off-gassing
- Great price point for the quality

It took a lot of research , but Iโm so happy with our choice. It feels good knowing weโre sleeping on something thatโs not only comfortable but truly clean without green washing!
